Kaney ONeill, president of ONeill Contractors, Inc., who, at age 19
enlisted in the Navy with dreams of becoming a Search and Rescue Swimmer, traveling the world and earning money for college.

She was stationed in Newport News, Virginia aboard the USS Nimitz to help refurbish the giant aircraft carrier. On September 15, 1999 Hurricane Floyd blew Kaney off a second floor balcony severing her spinal cord. A neurosurgeon, using power from backup generators, saved her life. As a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down, Kaney set out to rebuild her future by attending Northwestern University, earning both a BS and MA in the fields of Learning and Organizational Change and Learning Science.

When jobs did not materialize after graduation, Kaney followed in the footsteps of several generations of her family by entering into the roofing business by founding ONeill Contractors, Inc. in 2007.
